New in oDesk and have applied to many job postings without success. Are there any helpful tips on how to find a job contract at oDesk?
Just like in a live setting, looking for your first job contract at oDesk or any other freelance marketplace website may not be that easy. It may take a little patience, but here are a few tips to help you land your first oDesk job contract:
1. Finish your Contractor Profile. The Profile Completeness Bar, located on your Find Work > Find Jobs page, provides a link to the areas in your profile that need your attention. 2. Get familiar with how oDesk works. Take the oDesk Readiness Test and look over the Help and Policy pages. Visit the Contractor Learning Center. 3. Take lots of oDesk Skills Tests. There are more than 300 free skills tests to choose from, and the more tests you take, the more impressive your profile will look to potential clients. To score higher, check the test syllabus to see what you need to study beforehand. 4. Spell check everything. Do not send that cover letter until you have screened it in your favorite text editor for spelling and grammatical errors. You can only make a first impression once, so put your best foot forward with a well-written cover letter, tailored to each job application. Check the text in your profile, too. 5. Apply, apply, apply! Apply to lots of job postings to increase your chances of being hired. You can save your job searches, then set up RSS and/or email job alerts. However, be honest about your skills to avoid potential problems. Not sure how much to bid on fixed-price jobs, or what to set for your hourly rate? Just go to the Find Contractors page and use the advanced filter to find contractors with similar work experience, test scores and skills to compare rates and decide what you should set as your own.
